Heavenly Custard Cream Horns Recipe

Few desserts can match the elegance and irresistible charm of homemade cream horns. These delicate pastries feature a crispy, golden exterior wrapped into beautiful spiral cones and filled with a rich, silky custard cream that melts in your mouth. Each bite delivers a perfect contrast between the crunchy pastry shell and the smooth, creamy filling inside. Cream horns are a classic bakery favorite, loved for their light texture and luxurious flavor.

Making cream horns at home may look impressive, but it’s surprisingly simple when you follow the right steps. The magic begins with flaky pastry dough that bakes into golden perfection, followed by a luscious custard filling that adds sweetness and richness. These treats are perfect for special occasions, tea time, or whenever you want to impress your family and guests with a bakery-quality dessert made from scratch.

Ingredients

For the pastry horns:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)

For the custard cream filling:

  • 2 cups (500 ml) milk
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the pastry

Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Roll out the puff pastry and cut into thin strips about 2 cm wide.

Step 2: Shape the horns

Wrap each strip around a cone mold, overlapping slightly. Place on a baking tray.

Step 3: Apply egg wash

Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle sugar if desired.

Step 4: Bake

Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely before removing from molds.

Step 5: Make the custard cream

In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Heat milk in a saucepan until warm, then slowly add to the egg mixture while whisking.

Return mixture to heat and cook until thick. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla, and let cool.

Step 6: Fill the horns

Transfer custard to a piping bag and fill each horn generously.
