Ingredients

For the pasta:

  • 400 g (14 oz) spaghetti
  • Water for boiling
  • 1 tablespoon salt

For the meat sauce:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce (or crushed tomatoes)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • ½ cup water

Optional for serving:

  • Grated parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley or basil

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the spaghetti

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add salt, then add the spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions (usually 8–10 minutes) until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the ground beef

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned.

Step 3: Add onion and garlic

Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4: Add tomato sauce and seasoning

Pour in the tomato sauce and add tomato paste, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, paprika, and sugar. Add water and stir well.

Step 5: Simmer the sauce

Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to develop and thicken.

Step 6: Combine and serve

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and mix well, or serve the sauce on top of the spaghetti. Garnish with parmesan cheese and fresh herbs if desired.

Tips for Best Results

  • Simmer longer for deeper flavor.
  • Use fresh garlic and onion for better taste.
  • Add a little butter at the end for extra richness.
  • Always salt your pasta water.
