🥨 Mozzarella Stuffed Soft Pretzels
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp melted butter
Filling
- Mozzarella cheese sticks or mozzarella cut into thick strips
Baking Bath
- 10 cups water
- ⅔ cup baking soda
Topping
- 1 egg, beaten (egg wash)
- Coarse salt (or sesame seeds / garlic butter – optional)
Instructions
1️⃣ Activate the Yeast
In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
2️⃣ Make the Dough
Add salt, melted butter, and flour. Mix and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled.
3️⃣ Shape & Stuff
Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a long rope, flatten slightly, place mozzarella in the center, and pinch tightly to seal.
Shape into pretzels or sticks.
4️⃣ Baking Soda Bath
Bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
Boil each pretzel for 20–30 seconds, then remove and place on a lined baking sheet.
5️⃣ Bake
Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.
Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12–15 minutes until deep golden brown.
6️⃣ Serve Hot
Best enjoyed warm with marinara sauce, cheese sauce, or garlic butter 😍

- Seal the dough well so cheese doesn’t leak
- Use low-moisture mozzarella for best results
- Want extra flavor? Brush with butter + garlic after baking
