Chicken Cordon Bleu is a timeless classic that combines elegance with comfort in every bite. Originating from European cuisine, this dish features tender chicken breast stuffed with savory ham and rich, melty cheese, then coated in crispy golden breadcrumbs and cooked to perfection. Ingredients

For the chicken:

  • 2 large chicken breasts
  • 4 slices ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or mozzarella)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

For coating:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
  • Oil for frying (or baking spray if baking)

Optional creamy sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the chicken

  • Slice each chicken breast horizontally to create a pocket or butterfly it.
  • Place the chicken between plastic wrap and gently pound to flatten evenly.
  • Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Step 2: Add filling

  • Place ham slices and cheese slices on each chicken breast.
  • Roll the chicken tightly and secure with toothpicks if needed.

Step 3: Bread the chicken

  • Prepare three bowls:
    1. Flour
    2. Eggs mixed with milk
    3. Breadcrumbs
  • Coat each chicken roll in flour, then egg mixture, then breadcrumbs.

Step 4: Cook the chicken

Frying method:

  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Fry chicken rolls for 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Finish in oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes.

OR Baking method (healthier):

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
  • Place chicken on baking tray and bake for 25–30 minutes until fully cooked.

Step 5: Optional sauce

  • Melt butter in a pan.
  • Add flour and whisk for 1 minute.
  • Slowly add milk while whisking.
  • Add cheese, salt, and pepper. Stir until creamy.

Serving Suggestions

Serve hot with:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Salad
  • Or rice

Tips for Best Results

  • Use thin chicken breasts for easier rolling.
  • Chill the rolled chicken for 15 minutes before cooking to keep shape.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
  • Do not overcook to keep chicken juicy.
